John Kotter, noted Harvard Business School Professor draws
a clear and helpful delineation between management and leadership in
his text: "A Force for Change: How leadership differs from
Management".
He argues that applying good management practices produces a
degree of predictability and order with the potential for consistent
short term results, while applying good leadership practice produces
change and has the potential to produce extremely useful change.
Managers are often called on in today's business environment to
"toggle" between applying good leadership and management practices
depending on the situation, in order to accomplish the organizations
goals while carrying out their day to day responsibilities.
Kotter argues that successful transformation is 70 to 90 percent
leadership and only 10 to 30 percent management.
